Impetigo
Impetigo is a contagious bacterial skin infection that typically affects children, but can also occur in adults. It is caused by either Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria and is characterized by red sores or blisters that ooze fluid and develop a honey-coloured crust.
Symptoms of impetigo may include itchy, red skin, blisters filled with fluid, and crusty sores. Impetigo is commonly found on the face, particularly around the nose and mouth, but can also occur on other parts of the body. The infection is spread through direct contact with someone who has impetigo, or with items that have come into contact with the infected person, such as towels or clothing.
Treatment options
Impetigo can be treated with antibiotics to clear up the infection and reduce the risk of complications:
- Topical antibiotics: over-the-counter options such as Polysporin, or prescription-strength antibiotics such as mupirocin, applied directly to the affected areas of the skin.
- Oral antibiotics: if the infection is severe or widespread, your doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics such as penicillin or cephalexin.
- Good hygiene practices: keep the affected area clean and dry, using mild soap and warm water several times a day.
- Soaking and removing crusts: soak the affected area in warm, soapy water for several minutes to soften and remove crusts, then gently remove them with a clean, damp washcloth.
- Avoiding scratching: scratching can spread the infection — keep the area covered with a bandage if necessary.
Follow your doctor's instructions carefully and finish the full course of antibiotics to ensure the infection is completely cleared up.
