The Ontario government is expanding access to care by allowing pharmacists to prescribe Paxlovid
The Ontario government is taking steps to make healthcare more accessible and convenient for its citizens by allowing pharmacists to prescribe Paxlovid medicine. This new policy provides people with a safe and effective medication. Paxlovid is an antiviral treatment option used to reduce severe outcomes from COVID-19. Pharmacists are highly-trained professionals capable of safely and effectively making medication decisions; allowing them to prescribe Paxlovid is another step towards offering better access to care for Ontarians.
This is an innovative approach that allows more people to get the care they need. The decision helps alleviate wait times in doctors' offices and makes it easier for Ontarians to access health care right in their own communities.
This knowledge allows pharmacists to assess a patient's condition accurately before determining the most appropriate treatment option based on their individual needs. In addition to providing advice on how to take medicines correctly and helping patients recognize any potential side effects or drug interactions, pharmacists also offer counselling on lifestyle modifications that could help improve long-term outcomes. With their expertise in medication safety and efficacy, pharmacists have become an integral part of the healthcare system, ensuring patients get access to safe and effective treatments for their conditions.
Who is eligible
Pharmacists have been able to prescribe Paxlovid to eligible individuals at no cost since December 12, 2022. Eligible individuals can contact Optimum Pharmacy to be evaluated by the pharmacist to see if Paxlovid is a good option for them. The prescription drug Paxlovid is for people who:

Pharmacists prescribing Paxlovid expands access and offers increased protection to the most vulnerable people. Optimum Pharmacy is pleased to be able to prescribe COVID-19 treatments like Paxlovid to patients.
We understand how important it is to provide people with access to the most effective treatments available. This policy is part of our commitment to providing our patients with the best possible care — we are proud to offer an additional layer of protection for vulnerable members of our community by offering access to Paxlovid.
"By increasing access to these treatments in more convenient ways, we are helping to keep people healthier and reduce COVID-19-related hospital admissions," Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones said on Dec. 8.
